A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
