European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
